Guest Blogger:Josh Swallow is an undergrad student at Texas A&M. He is currently in his final year and exploring opportunities in the non-profit sector for his career. This summer he spent time working at Dexterity, meeting with charities, donors and social entrpereneurs.
I think it is safe to say that technology has had a huge part in my life since the day that I was born. So many aspects of my life have been made “easier” because of it. For example, paying my bills at university is one of the simplest things in the world now (aside from having to let go of them sweet, sweet, dollar bills y’all) that takes a few minutes of my time whereas it used to be somewhat of an ordeal. This is a simple example but the same concept can be applied to charitable giving. So how has technology affected the charitable sector?
Some major developments have happened with the technology at Dexterity Ventures Inc. (DVI)! Here is the overview of what has been going on:
GIVE_api Version 2.5
We have been busy working on updating our GIVE_api. The latest version will be release early in Q3, and will include the ability to make real-time payments.
Developers Libraries
To aid developers in implementing our GIVE_api in their projects, Dexterity Ventures Inc. has created a series of libraries for some of the more popular development languages.
Developers can download the GIVE_api development libraries for Android, iOS, ASP/.NET, JAVA and also PHP. Each of the packages contains the full library, a detailed readme file and a useable demo. If you have any questions regarding the libraries, please contact us at .
It has been busy here at Dexterity Ventures Inc. (DVI) over the second quarter of 2015. Here is a quick snapshot of what the Tech Team has been working on:
Version 2.0: In May we released Version 2.0 of our GIVE_api, which provides access to the data that DVI has gathered on 1.6+ million charities across North America. The XML/JSON web service gives developers the ability to quickly add philanthropy into a web or mobile based application. Developers were also able to use the GIVE_api at The Change Tank, a social good idea and pitch event that took place May 22-24, 2015.

The entire Dexterity Ventures (DVI) team has been head down in preparation for GivingTuesday and the presentation at CKX Summit in Toronto (more info about that here) that happened on November 20th. As such, we would like to use our tech blog this month as a taster for the things we've launched over the month.
We set-up and launched the GivingTuesday Campaign for Place2Give and Dexterity Ventures in anticipation of Tuesday December 2nd(aka 2014’s ‘GivingTuesday’). The Place2Give GivingTuesday Motif Giving Campaign can be found here.

Banking on Shared Value: How Dexterity Ventures can help
Last June, Shared Value Initiative released the report called “Banking on Shared Value: How Banks Profit by Rethinking Their Purpose.” In this study, industry leaders explore ways for banks to create shared value, which happens when they yield business returns through their efforts to contribute to the health of the communities around them.
Banks are entering an age of change, where they have an opportunity to emerge from the financial crisis with a new outlook and strategy on how they can serve society. The report features the many different ways that leading financial institutions have embraced this new way of thinking – creating shared value and going beyond the smaller scale corporate philanthropy and CSR efforts of the past.

In my Wanderings... The Why of Dexterity Consulting & Place2Give
I took the last couple of weeks off... Well not exactly "off" but I was on a holiday in Guatemala where I was volunteering for a wonderful NGO - Dentistry for All. You can read about my trip and the people that I met on my Calgary Herald blog. There are four articles posted in the Calgary Herald along with photos from Brodie Wilkinson and Hope Photography.
